Road Trip - Newport RI
Newport is a picturesque coastal town with rich New England architecture, historic mansions and gorgeous ocean views.
We left Connecticut and made our way 45 miles up the coast to spend the day in Newport, Rhode Island. The day we went it was raining all day so we were limited in what we could, but we made the most of it and had a wonderful day.
Sights to See – Newport:
- Newport Cliff Walk – The Cliff Walk is a 3 ½ mile scenic path along the rocky cliffs of Newport with ocean views on one side and gorgeous Guild Age mansions on the other. It was free to walk the path but there is a cost for parking at various locations along the path.
- The Breakers – We toured The Breakers, which is the Vanderbilt Mansion in Newport, that is also used in the filming of the HBO show “The Gilded Age”. It was so cool to see since I watch that show. Admission to tour the mansion was $32 per person.
- Goat Island – We stumbled upon Goat Island. It was at one time the location of a military fort and later the US Naval Torpedo Station. Now it includes a very large hotel/resort and an expansive marina, which holds a crazy number of million-dollar yachts and superyachts. We saw the Elysian, which is owned by John Henry (owner of the Red Sox). There was not much to do there unless you are staying at the resort, but it was really cool just to see all the huge yachts and sailboats in the marina.
- Ocean Drive – We drove the length of Ocean Drive along the ocean to see all the more modern mansions. We couldn’t believe the size of them and how many there were. Along that way, we drove though Fort Adams State Park and then past the Newport Country Club, which was pretty impressive. Then Ocean Avenue loops back to the south end of the Cliff Walk.
