Road Trip - Portland ME
From Boston, we travelled north to Maine. It was an “all-lighthouse” day where we were able to see 8 different lighthouses within a couple of hours of Portland, where we stayed for the night. Every one was completely different. The first (Nubble) and last (Marshall Point) were our favorites.
Sights to See:
- Cape Neddick (Nubble) Lighthouse – It stands on Nubble Island about 100 yards offshore from Cape Neddick Point. It is not accessible to the public but you can get some amazing views from nearby Sohier Park.
- Portland Head Lighthouse – This is an iconic Maine landmark on the shores of Fort Williams Park in Cape Elizabeth. There is a very large park with picnic, recreation areas, and hiking. You cannot go up the tower, but you can get up close and there is a small gift shop. This one was very crowded on the day we went.
- Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse – This lighthouse was located on the breakwater at Southern Maine Community College in South Portland. Parking is very limited in the area of the campus. It is a long walk down the rocky breakwater pathway to the lighthouse. You can tour the inside for $10 from May thru beginning of October, but the grounds are open year round.
- Ram Island Ledge Light Station – Ram Island Ledge is on a jagged finger of rock one-quarter mile long, marking the northern entrance into Portland’s outer harbor. The ledge runs southwest off nearby Ram Island, and has long been one of the most feared spots by local mariners. It is not accessible to the public but you can see it in the distance from Portland Head Lighthouse.
- Halfway Rock Light Station – This was another lighthouse on an island in the distance visible from Portland Head Lighthouse.
- Portland Breakwater (Bug Light) Lighthouse – This is also sometimes referred to a Bug Light Park Lighthouse. It is at the end of a really long rocky breakwater path. You can get up close to the lighthouse but you cannot go into it. There is ample parking.
- Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse – This is another at the end of an almost mile long rocky breakwater path. You can go into lighthouse. There is parking along the road before you get the park.
- Marshall Point Lighthouse – This is the lighthouse that was featured in the movie, Forrest Gump movie, in the scene where Forrest ran up the lighthouse and then turned around and ran back. You can go up to the lighthouse but not into it. The grounds are open year round, but the museum and gift shop are only open from Memorial Day to Columbus Day.
Restaurants:
- Sea Salt Lobster Restaurant, Saco ME – It was Maine Lobster week when we went, so we ended the day with dinner at the Sea Salt Lobster Restaurant near Portland. Very good.
Hotel: Comfort Inn & Suites Scarborough-Portland, 329 US Route 1, Scarborough, ME – very nice, relatively new, and reasonable rates
